Franchise: Marvel Cinematic Universe

Bruce Banner (smirking): All these super-powered villains... all these world-ending crises... what is this, some kind of movie!?
Nick Fury (smirking): Nice Lampshade Hanging, my friend Bruce.
-The Avengers: Age of Ultron

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (or MCU) is a Trope Overdosed Crossover Frenzy series of Lighter But Edgier superhero films, Neo-Noir Psychobabble TV shows, and Definition Of Insanity New Media series based on Marvel Comics with Over 9000 characters. Started with the first Iron Man film in 2008, the MCU has grown to encompass films such as Thor, Guardians Of The Galaxy, and Ant-Man, TV shows such as Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D and Agent Carter, and New Media series such as Daredevil.

Oh, and fair warning... do NOT hate on the MCU around these parts ... mmmm-kay?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is the Trope Namer for:

  • Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D Syndrome
  • Big Damn The Avengers
  • Iron Man Pee Poo Boner Fart Balls
  • Looks Like Captain America Is Pregnant Again
  • Tony's Trademark Smirk
  • The De-freakin'-nouement
  • Thor's Trusty Hammer
  • We Got A Hulk [Shrugs, Theme Music Plays]
  • You Just Got Marvel Cinematic Universe'd

The Marvel Cinematic Universe provides examples of the following tropes:

  • A God Am I: Loki's Wham Speech to Thor in Thor 2 contains elements of this:

Loki: "Thor, you and I are both Gods from the ancient Norse Mythology of earth. You are known for being in charge of lightning and I am a tricky jokester God"

Thor: "your insane <sic>"

  • Arc Number: 2 in Thor 2, 3 in Iron Man 3, etc.
  • Arc Words: "Iron Man, remember that only you - with the help of your friends, Marvel's The Avengers - can restore order to the Marvel Cinematic Universe or MCU"
  • Breakout Character: Boom Mike Brett from Thor 2 - despite being a Canon Foreigner, this Sound Guy With A Heart Of Gold would quickly bbecome one of the most popular characters in the Marvel Canon

*Excuse me, but This Troper believes that Brett made his first appearance in the first Thor, you cretin. You fucking idiot. Jesus. Oh, and "become" has one "b" in it ... maybe try learning to spell before not knowing about movies next time.

  • Call Back: In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Black Widow says "Remember when you fought against the Red Skull and the evil HYDRA orginization in the past?", followed by a Montage of scenes of Captain America beating up the Red Skull, and Captain America responding to Black Widow by saying "Yeah, I remember that - it was fucking cool" (A reference to Captain America: The First Avenger)
  • Deadpan Snarker: Iron Man, of course, but also Thor, Captain America, Nick Fury, The Hulk a little bit, Black Widow, Guardian from Guardians Of The Galaxy, hell even Daredevil gets his fair share of snarking in. And Ant-Man and everyone in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D

Real Life Example: after seeing Guardians Of The Galaxy my mom told me to take a bath and I said "Yeah mom I'd love to take a bath ... but unfortunately hell hasn't frozen over yet" a kick-ass line worthy of Guardian himself

  • Everything's Better With Sports Cars: In Iron Man 3, Tony Stark is shown driving around in a big sports car.
  • Everything Is Upside Down: Inverted. For most of the MCU, things are the right way up.
  • Fan-dom
  • Five Man Band: The Avengers:

The Bold: Captain America
The Snarky, Sarcastic One: Iron Man
a woman: Black Widow
The Strong Guy: The Hulk
Number 5: Thor

  • Flat What: Every member of The Avengers gets at least three or four of these during the climactic showdown against Loki
  • Hate-dom
  • Ho Yay: This Troper's heart was aflame with forbidden passions upon seeing the shining alabaster perfection of Chrisses Hemsworth and Evans, and once the image of their coupling had entered my mind, o! I was overcome.
  • How Do I Edit Wiki: Please tell me how to edit wwiki. please say how i make edit to wiki
  • Karma Police: Invoked with Captain America's Teenage Sidekick, Tony Karmapolice
  • Law Of Superheroine Breast Resolution: Black Widow provides an example of a textbook Type 3 of this trope
  • Lots And Lots Of Continuity: Wow wow wow my friend. LASDFlaksdfnalkn.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: Subverted. Not only do the works in the MCU not portray vampires in a recognizably different way to classic literature, no vampires are shown on screen for the entirety of the MCU's running time.
  • Really Good-dom
  • Rule of Cool: Holy Fuckshitting Christnipples. Jesus. This so much.
  • Running Gag: Robert Downey Junior saying a funny line as Iron Man like huzza whuzza wha or uhhhhh ok yeah
  • Shout Out: In The Avengers: Age of Ultron's Stinger, Captain America turns to the camera and says "Watch Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D on ABC"
  • Stinger: Oh. My. God. FFFffffuck:

After the end credits of Thor, an extra scene is shown in which a sleeping Thor suddenly opens his eyes wide, sits sharply upright, and frowns slightly, as if to say "what a crazy nightmare." Or Was It? The camera zooms in on Thor's Trusty Hammer. Maybe it wasn't a dream after all Thor...

After the end credits of Iron Man, a scene is shown in which Nick Fury congratulates Iron Man on saving the world or whatever, upon which Tony Stark walks up and says "Hey, and that goes double for me!" Nick Fury is confused - how can this be? Iron Man removes his suit's helmet. Nick Fury gasps. The camera pulls back, revealing the smirking inhabitant of the Iron Man suit to be Joss Whedon, foreshadowing his starring role in The Avengers. Smash To Black.

After the end credits of Ant-Man, the camera pans out to reveal that Marvel's Doctor Strange was standing slightly out-of-frame for the entire movie.

  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks: Many fans of Iron Man were disappointed when the second film in the MCU - The Incredible Hulk - was released with an entirely different name than Iron Man. For this reason Iron Man has built up a substantial Hate-dom
  • The Chumbo Bumbo: Ant-Man. Just ... Ant-Man.
  • Weirdo Doctor: It hasn't come out yet, but what the hell - Doctor Strange
  • Well Whatever-dom
