LHC - The Large Hadron Collider (thanks CombatMedic) - This particle accelerator will be the largest device of its kind when it begins operating in 2008. It will also have a chance of destroying our planet or the entire universe through the creation of a black hole, strange matter that is more stable than ordinary matter, magnetic monopoles that could catalyze proton decay, or by triggering a transition into a different quantum mechanical vacuum.

The chance that any of that will happen is very small, so they're willing to risk it.
